La Cathédrale Sainte-Eulalie de Barcelone

En plein quartier gothique, la cathédrale de Barcelone est un lieu de recueillement, ou pour le moins de repos pour le voyageur fatigué. La cathédrale a été construite au cours du XIVeme siècle pour remplacer la première cathédrale romane sur les ruines mêmes de la cathédrale primitive, construite au Vieme siècle et détruite par Almanzor en 985. Il s´agit d´une des constructions les plus représentatives du Gothique Catalan.

De l´extérieur, la Cathédrale paraît assez sobre. La décoration est réduite, cela ne fait qu´amplifier la présence des gargouilles, présentes sur toutes les façades. D´apparence un peu trapue, ses deux clochers octogonaux lui donnent néanmoins un air élancé. Le parvis et la place de la Cathédrale sont des lieux publics très fréquentés ou les Barcelonais se retrouvent pour discuter ou prendre un verre.

La cathédrale possède trois nefs de la même hauteur, cela en fait un édifice véritablement catalan. De cette architecture se dégage une sensation d´unité architecturale et d´homogénéité.

Au niveau de la partie inférieure du presbytère se trouve un large escalier. En l´empruntant on arrive à la crypte, ou l´on peut voir le sépulcre de Sainte Eulalie, inauguré en 1339 lors d´une grande cérémonie de transfert des reliques.

Par une porte latérale on accède au jardin de l´église. Il est entouré de quatre galeries et est orné de palmiers et de magnolias. Un point d´eau et une fontaine en font un endroit frais et agréable où il fait bon se poser un moment.
